Please leave your questions below and we’ll address them in the comments or in our next installment of Ask RealPlayer.

Q: What is Private Video mode?

A: There may be some content that you have in your RealPlayer library that’s not meant for everyone to see such as homemade videos. The free version of RealPlayer has a Private Video mode built-in. The feature can be used to store videos in a hidden video folder within the RealPlayer Library and will require a pin that you choose to access the folder. After you watch the video it will also clear it from the video clip history. It’s a great feature that allows you to keep the videos you want private and still store them in the RealPlayer Library.

To access the feature simply click on the icon of the eye in the top right corner of the RealPlayer app. A Private Mode pop-up window will appear and prompt you to enter a 4-16 character pin. The pin for the private video feature can include letters and numbers. When the feature is on you will see an orange Private Mode button where the eye icon was located in the application.

Next, click on the Library tab and select a video you want to mark as a private video and right-click on it. Select “Make this file Private” from the menu. The hidden video will no longer be visible in the RealPlayer video library. To view private videos, click on the eye icon in the upper right corner of the RealPlayer app and enter your pin. The video will appear in the Library.

DOWNLOAD PRIVATE VIDEOS

You can also download videos using Private Mode with RealPlayer. There are two options for doing this. If you already have Private Mode turned on in RealPlayer the videos you download will appear as hidden videos in RealPlayer.

If Private Mode isn’t turned on, you can still download videos and save them as Real hidden videos. When you see a video you want to download, mouse over the top right corner of the video screen to see the Download This Video button. Click the down arrow next to it and select Private Mode. You will be prompted to enter your Private Mode PIN code. The video will be downloaded in Private Mode. To view the video, follow the steps above to select and view private videos.

I just downloaded RealPlayer. I downloaded a movie I want to make private. I clicked on the icon for the private mode for the first time and it asked me for a pin. I entered a four digit number and got a message that the pin was invalid. Next, I entered a password with a combination of numbers and letters and got the same message. I can find no help or option to set the pin or reset, whatever the case may be. Help!

Hi Ron,

If you have forgotten or lost your Private mode PIN, you will have to reset it. The PIN is stored on your computer and can’t be altered without access to your computer.

First, uninstall RealPlayer but keep your Library.

Windows XP
1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add or Remove Programs.
2. In the “Currently installed programs” dialog, select RealPlayer, and then click Change/Remove.
3. In the “Uninstallation of RealPlayer” dialog, confirm that My Library does NOT have a check mark.
4. Click OK, then click Yes.

Windows Vista, 7, and 8
1. Click the Start icon in the lower left corner of your screen, click Control Panel, click Programs, and then click Programs and Features.
2. In the “Programs and Features” dialog, click Uninstall.
3. In the “Uninstallation of RealPlayer” dialog, confirm that My Library does NOT have a check mark.
4. Click OK, then click Yes.

Then, reinstall RealPlayer
1. Go to http://www.real.com, click the RealPlayer Free Download button, and follow the prompts.
2. In RealPlayer, click the eye icon to enter Private Mode and set up your PIN.

Where are the private videos stored in the computer (in addition to Real Player library)?

Please follow the steps to locate the private videos in your hard drive,

1. Open Run command (press Window button and letter ‘R’ button together on your keyboard).
2. Type %appdata% without any space and then click OK button.
3. A window will open and locate RPrivate folder.
4. Double click the above folder to open.
5. You will be able to locate the private videos.
6. Select all videos and make a right click.
7. Then select Properties.
8. Uncheck Read-only and Hidden check bot and click OK.

If this doesn’t work, please send an email to help@real.com, include a brief description of the issue, copy and paste the link to this thread within the email for further assistance.

When I downloaded the current version of RealPlayer, the PRIVATE videos I had saved with the previous version went missing.

I tried the following (as listed on one of your HELP pages) to locate any Private folder on my computer with the missing files, but it did NOT show any folder of Private files:

Additionally, I cannot access Private files (either old ones pr make new ones) on the current version of RealPlayer I downloaded. On the RealPlayer app, where the EYE/Private icon should be, there is my sign-on name with a button just to the left asking me to upgrade to Premium — no icon to access Private mode.

So… I want to see if my old Private videos are still accessible. How can I do that?

Thanks.
