5 Sites to Download Online Videos Free

by Joe Kukura on October 18, 2012

download online videosWatching free videos on the web is easy. Unfortunately, we don’t always have time to watch videos online when we find them. That’s what downloading videos is for, so we can watch them at our leisure.  Most web videos these days, though, are embedded into the web page — making it harder to download online videos to your computer.

The old “Right click, Save As” strategy doesn’t always work so well anymore. If you want to download a video embedded on a site like YouTube, you can still do so if you have a video downloader, such as RealPlayer. If you don’t have a free video downloader installed on your computer, just click the orange button on the top right corner of this page to download RealPlayer free.

DOWNLOAD ONLINE VIDEOS AND BUILD UP YOUR VIDEO LIBRARY

We’ve rounded up five sites full of great content where you can find and download online videos free and watch them at your leisure. Whether you’re interested in seeing the latest viral video sensations, watching old movies, finding the latest in entertainment news, watching movie trailers, or discovering new video channels with fresh content daily these sites have you covered. To make sure a video is legal to download, look for licensing information about the video. Typically, videos with a “Creative Commons” license are legal to download, but may have limitations on how you use the video.

Use RealPlayer to download it to your computer and watch it any time. Simply hover over the top right corner of the video as it’s playing and click on the Download This Video option.

1. YouTube

You’re probably already familiar with YouTube, the world’s most popular video-sharing site and the third most popular site on the entire Internet. YouTube racks up a staggering four billion video views daily. The appearance and interface of YouTube are straightforward providing a simple, but effective video player in the middle of a white screen. Any registered user can upload their own video to YouTube.

The site has also become a popular source for official versions of music videos, movie trailers, and particularly crowd-pleasing TV commercials. Most of the videos are shot and submitted by regular everyday YouTube users, and some – like a few well-known funny cat videos — have gone on to enjoy enormous global popularity on YouTube.

2. Metacafe

Metacafe is another video site specializing in shorter and more popular videos. Whereas YouTube is a giant, endless buffet of videos, Metacafe is more like the Chef’s Special of the Day – fewer overall videos that are well-organized and easy to find in genres like Music, Sports, and TV clips. Metacafe keeps an outstanding array of current movie trailers, and then pairs them with exclusive interviews and behind-the-scenes videos related to that particular movie. Metacafe’s “Trending on the Web” section curates and collects the Internet’s most popular viral videos of the day. It’s a great place to quickly find a certain popular viral video you’ve heard about.

3. Dailymotion

One of the largest video sites in the world, Dailymotion makes finding videos easy with a nicely organized home page. Dailymotion visitors see a slew of the current videos in categories such as Funny, Geek Out, News, and countless others. Most videos on Dailymotion are less than four minutes. Registered “super users” can upload videos of up to an hour in length and in high-definition (HD), but you don’t have to register to download the longer videos. Some of the video categories on Dailymotion are a little racier than most YouTube categories, but family audiences can still enjoy categories like Animals and Games. Dailymotion is easy to navigate, and pulls up galleries of recommended videos that you’re likely to enjoy based on your viewing habits.

4. Vimeo

Specializing in HD, Vimeo is an amateur video site where the results are anything but amateur. Most of the videos available on Vimeo are user-submitted; it’s not a site to visit if you’re looking for popular music videos or movie trailers. What you will find, though, are big and beautiful HD videos shot by some of the most skilled up-and-coming directors and animators. The Vimeo video screen is far larger and has a higher resolution than any of the other sites mentioned here. Those who like to upload videos to your cell phone will appreciate that Vimeo videos are optimized for playback on mobile devices.

5. IMDb

The Internet Movie Database has become more than just a tool for figuring out who’s that actress in the movie you’re watching. IMDb has grown into a site that offers movie trailers and clips from popular talk shows like “The Late Show with David Letterman” – all of which can be downloaded to your computer. There are also full episodes of TV shows that can be watched at IMDb. The site even offers a huge gallery of full-length movies and short films made by up-and-coming directors.

Many of the movies and short-films listed on the site are available for viewing, however, you’ll be given the option to go to another site such as Crackle or Amazon to watch the movie. Note: Those sites typically require a subscription. That said there are older video options on the site such as Paradise Canyon with John Wayne, as well that don’t require a subscription. Those videos are part of the Internet Archive Project and can be watched online for free or even downloaded from the site.

DOWNLOAD ONLINE VIDEOS WITH REALPLAYER VIDEO DOWNLOADER

With RealPlayer, you’ll have the ability to download online videos you see on the Internet and save them to your computer. If you’ve installed RealPlayer, when watching a video online you’ll see the “Download This Video” button appear at the top right corner of the video player. Click that button, and the RealPlayer downloader will download the video to your computer and store it in the RealPlayer library.

Do you have other favorite sites for downloading videos? Any great recommendations for short films or epic funny videos? When do you watch the videos you download? Let us know below in the comments section below.

Hi Jorge, it’s really simple! Anytime a video is available to download, RealPlayer Downloader lets you know.

1. Find a video you want to add to your RealPlayer Library.

2. Hover your mouse over the video and the “Download This Video” button will appear above the right corner of the video (if it is available for download).

3. Click on the “Download This Video” button and RealPlayer Downloader will begin downloading the video to your RealPlayer Library.

4. Once downloaded to your library, you can watch the video anytime, anywhere – even without an internet connection.
If you have any trouble downloading a video, refer this link: https://real.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/9801/kw/9801.

If none of the above works, send an email to help@real.com so that we can help further.

I downloaded the latest version of ReaPlayer and lost the ability to download internet videos. Can’t download from YouTube, MetaCafe, and many other sites. I am running Windows XP SP3.

real downloder after 90% not install

22 Real Team January 28, 2013 at 11:11 pm

Hi Ajay, please follow these troubleshooting steps; this will usually resolve the issue.

Step 1: Empty the contents of the TEMP folder:

Open the TEMP folder inside the Windows folder on the C: drive.
From the Edit menu, choose Select All.
From the File menu, choose Delete.
When asked “are you are sure you want to delete these items?” – click Yes.
Once these steps are complete, close any open windows and restart the computer. Once the computer has restarted, try the installation again..
Step 2: Close background programs through Task Manager.

Step 3: Delete RealDownloader folder from c:\program files\realdownloader.

Step 4: Run Scandisk and Disk Defragmenter: https://real.custhelp.com//app//answers/detail/a_id/8615

Step 5: Install RealDownloader.

If that doesn’t work, send an email to help@real.com so that we can help you further.

The realplayer download tab no longer appears (Version 16.0.0.282). I have two computers running XP and one with Windows 7. Both computers with Windows XP using V16.0.0.282have stopped downloading. The Windows 7 system still works with the previous version (15.0.6.14). I am afraid to upgrade to the new version and take the risk of Realplayer stop working.

24 RealPlayer December 24, 2012 at 11:55 am

Is this happening with all the Internet Browsers? It should work with Firefox. Have you tried that?

30 Real Team January 28, 2013 at 11:12 pm

Hello RM, please try the following:

Go to the Task Manager
Click on Process tab (at the top)
Locate Recording Manager
Right click on Recording Manager and then click on End Process
Close RealPlayer and try to download a video

If that doesn’t work, a complete uninstall and clean install of RealPlayer can usually fix the issue. To do that, follow ALL the steps in the below link, to include deleing the RealPlayer folders. Click here: https://real.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/8721

Next, ensure the RealPlayer plug-in is enabled in your web browser. Follow these instructions: https://real.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/8883.

WINDOWS 8 SUCKS!!! IT HAS COMPLETELY MESSED UP MY ENTIRE LIBRARY ON MY REAL PLAYER. I CANT WATCH MY MUSIC VIDEOS, PICTURES, AND MOVIES ANYMORE. COMPLETELY SCREWED UP MY LAPTOP. SIMPLY HATE, HATE, HATE IT!

36 Real Team January 28, 2013 at 11:14 pm

Hi Alfredo, I can see that you are really frustrated. Let me be clear that what you are experiencing isn’t a RealPlayer issue, but I can provide some information that will hopefully help. RealPlayer 15 isn’t compatible with the desktop version of Windows 8, however RealPlayer 16 is. If you have RealPlayer 15, uninstall it and install RealPlayer 16. To do so, follow ALL the instructions at the below link, to include deleting the RealPlayer folders. Click here: https://real.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/8721.

If that doesn’t help, send an email to help@real.com, so that we can help further.

Help the download button dosnt show up. is it because i am using Safari?

38 RealPlayer December 31, 2012 at 3:32 pm

Try using Firefox. If you’re using a Mac, it won’t show up instead download the RealPlayer downloader and you’ll get a pop-up screen showing you videos that you can download. Just click download in that screen to save videos.

So I downloaded realplayer 15, and now the video download doesn’t work. I have a laptop running windows 7 64-bit, and I use google chrome.

42 RealPlayer January 4, 2013 at 2:43 pm

Have you tried it with Firefox? There were some compatibility issues with the latest Google Chrome update and RealPlayer 15.

43 darrin January 1, 2013 at 4:09 pm

I have tried every recommended step to sort out why I do not get the download video button in google chrome. watched youtube videos followed step by setp instructions. i checked add ons are enabled and they are still no joy. one thing I did spot was on one of the youtube videos I noticed one option in real player itself is under the download & recording category. I do not get the download under that category at all. It just says recording. this is after un installing and re installing too.

44 RealPlayer January 4, 2013 at 2:40 pm

We’d like to help solve this for you, please contact us at: https://real.custhelp.com/app/contact

45 Jim Barnes January 1, 2013 at 4:19 pm

I am also having a problem with RealPlayer 16 download. Am using a Lenovo laptop, AMD A6 processor, Windows 7 Home Premium, and Internet Explorer 9. Tried to download a video from youtube yesterday and download window did not pop up. Tried downloading RealPlayer, was warned there was a version installed, but I re-installed. No help. Today I uninstalled RealPlayer, defragged the hard drive, and re-installed RealPlayer. Rebooted the laptop and tried to capture two different videos from youtube. The expected “Download this video?” balloon did not appear for either video.

Another laptop, a Toshiba Satelite C655D, with Windows & Home Premium, Internet Explorer 8, and Realplayer 15, did not have the same problem.

Any suggestions? Is RealPlayer 16 the problem? Both laptops are 64-bit.

46 Real Team January 28, 2013 at 11:17 pm

Hello Jim, sounds like you’ve tried several steps! We appreciate that. Actually, the RealPlayer dowwnload and record plug-in is not compatible with IE 64bit. However, to download videos using IE 32 bit, enable the RealPlayer plug-in within your browser. To do that, follow the steps here: http://real.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/8883.

If that doesn’t help, send an email to help@real.com so that we can help further.

49 Ellen Harman January 4, 2013 at 11:35 pm

I have IE 9 Windows 7. Since I upgraded to realplayer 15 free I have not gotton the download box when running mouse over the video. I read the comments above. I use the 32 bit, nothing has worked to correct this. It also does not work on Firefox, which I do not use. It does work on Google Chrome, but why should I have to change web browsers everytime I find a vid I want to save. Chrome is not set up and I have no real idea how it works.

Why does your downloader no longer work on IE?

50 RealPlayer January 7, 2013 at 10:48 am

There may be a settings issue. Please contact customer support at: https://real.custhelp.com/app/contact They should be able to provide more detailed information.

Family guy

54 Jack January 13, 2013 at 8:34 pm

Like so many above I can’t download any videos. My problems started when I upgraded to the latest version of free Real Player.

I can’t remember my password and although the Real Player webb site says they have sent me a new password I haven’t received it. Do I need a password for Real Player to work?

Can I download an old version anywhere? perhaps that might help.

The customer support you suggest is only for paid versions of real player. I can’t see the point in paying for the service if Real Player no longer works properly.

Please Help

55 Real Team January 27, 2013 at 6:45 pm

I have the latest version of Real Player.I need to stop the download button from constantly popping up.
The previous version had an x to turn it off.I have looked in preferences.I can’t find anything that refers to the download button in there.
I also tried to uninstall Real Player to be rid of it.The system said there was an error.I couldn’t uninstall.
Please tell me how to stop the download button. It pop ups constantly. It’s extremely annoying!
I can’t believe there isn’t a way to control this problem on the button itself.I can’t understand how you didn’t think of this.

70 Real Team January 27, 2013 at 7:58 pm

It’s simple! You can turn off “Download This Video” option by following these steps:

Go to: Start Menu>All Programs>RealNetworks>RealDownloader (Opens RealDownloader)

1. Click on RealDownloader menu at the top left corner.

2. Select Preferences.

3. Select “Don’t Show” (downloads are accessible again with a right click).

ur the best of all.

79 Panther February 5, 2013 at 10:46 am

I have tried to uninstall it several times. It says there’s an error. So I can’t get it out of my system.
I can’t believe it when companies go to so much trouble to create a product, and then make such an obvious mistake on something so simple.

101 marthaigarcia March 19, 2013 at 11:24 pm

I discovered that I need to open realplayer and click on web video. There I may search for a video. When the player window opens, I have the option to search through YouTube and there will the downloader option will appear. Took months to figure it out but its awesome. It’s all done through real player.

My Real Player Downloader disappears on me all the time.
I use Mozilla Firefox web-browser & sometime is there when I need it, & sometime is not.

I’m looking for info trying to find out how can I get it back.

Thank you for this article. I always enjoy using the Real Player when watching videos on the web.

108 Bill March 30, 2013 at 1:53 pm

Awesome program for sure. But will I get a Copyright Alert System warning from my ISP if I use it to download something from YouTube? Or does that only apply to P2P sites?

109 RealPlayer Team March 31, 2013 at 7:40 am

Hi Bill,

RealPlayer can download unprotected online streaming videos. However, we respect copyright protection so if the video is protected RealPlayer will not download it.

110 Jeff Harwood April 5, 2013 at 2:46 pm

I have downloaded and re downloaded realplayer time and time again. The downloader won’t work, the player wont show the video , if it will open the file at all. I’m getting disgusted with this crap. If you have a realplayer site that is functional with a functional version of the Real Player with a FUNCTIONAL DOWNLOADER please let me know on my facebook page Jeff Harwood, or at harwood.jeff4@gmail.com
